About the OPRA Exam
Purpose and Scope
The primary goal of the OPRA exam is to ensure that pharmacists educated outside of Australia and New Zealand have a level of knowledge equivalent to that of locally trained professionals. It focuses on core pharmaceutical sciences, with country-specific legislation covered in later steps.
Exam Structure
The OPRA is a 2.5-hour, computer-based test with 120 multiple-choice questions covering biomedical sciences, pharmacology, therapeutics, and patient care.
Note: The OPRA exam is set to replace the KAPS exam from March 2025 for pharmacists intending to practice in Australia.
Country-Specific Pathways
While the OPRA exam is a common step, the subsequent registration requirements differ for each country.
For Australia
After passing OPRA, candidates must complete further assessments and supervised practice as determined by the Pharmacy Board of Australia.
For New Zealand
Candidates must complete the NZ Pharmacy Legislation (NZPL) course and the EVOLVE Intern Training Programme.
